Benchmark Experiment to Evaluate Macrosegregation Generated by Bridging and Solidification Shrinkage Flow

We developed an improved Satou mold that can intentionally generate macrosegregation via bridging of the solidification structure and shrinkage flow. Herein, be achieved in a relatively small with inner dimension 30 mmT × 50 mmW 190 mmH. Casting experiments were conducted on Al–10mass%Cu alloy using this mold. The obtained samples analyzed detail by evaluating 3D morphology X-ray CT imaging, analyzing microstructure composition at cross-section SEM/EDX, observing macrostructure, visualizing temperature solid-fraction distributions linear interpolation measurement points. Channel-shaped positive segregation length approximately mm was generated along sample’s center line height direction. imaging voxel size 10 µm microstructural analyses SEM/EDX helped clearly observe channel-shaped region. average region 35.12 mass%Cu, corresponding to eutectic Al–Cu alloy. From observation macrostructure visualization cross section, we could confirm formation isosurface solid fraction. these evaluation analysis results, mechanism driven flow clarified. confirmed casting serve as effective benchmark for formation.
